Mountin biking tips to get you started.

I was so excited to hear from Kim that it's Biking Month for all you trining Divas! I hope you all had an opportunity to visit Vienna Bike Shop and get fitted. Mountain biking is my favorite part of the triathlon. It's easy to get frustrated when you start mountain biking (or running, or kayaking, or anything for that matter...) so here are a few tips:

Don't get down on yourself if you need a break! Especially with the air still being cold, it can be hard to breathe. Take your time, breathe, and work on meeting your goal.

Pedal smoothly! If you come to a big hill, don't try to floor it. A smooth, constant pedal stroke is the best way to climb.

Do not panic and grab your front brake! I know from experience that this won't end well, and you may fly over the handlebars. Brake smoothly, and try to use your rear brake more.

Drink water! I know Kim keeps telling you all this, and she's right. Carry water with you (make sure your bike has a bottle cage, or invest in a CamelBak type of hydration system, $30-40, worth it if you're going to do any serious riding) Do not wait until you're thirsty to take a drink, you'll already be dehydrated.

Wear a helmet. This is not negotiable. And you're required to wear on in the race.

HAVE FUN!
